Aluminium casting 1

X-ray photograph:
Shrinkage cavity in an aluminium casting (1)

Information:
The inspection of castings is a classic application example for non-destructive testing (NDT). There are many different methods for material testing. But the digital x-ray inspection is, due to its digital ability of automation and its economic efficiency, a future-oriented method of non-destructive testing.

Possibilities of inspection:
Shrinkage cavity / lack of material / porousness / cracks / form divergences / inclusions

Aluminium casting 2

X-ray photograph:
Blowholes in an aluminium casting (2)

Information:
This digital x-ray image also clearly shows blowholes in an aluminium casting. The digital x-ray inspection offers the possibility to discover and to analyze several sources of trouble in only one single examination process.

Possibilities of inspection:
blowholes / porousness / inclusions / cracks / form divergences

Injection moulded plastic parts

X-ray photograph:
Blowholes in plastic parts

Information:
Blowholes are undesirable air inclusions in the material structure. Caused by blowholes a weakening of the cross section arises and reduces the needed stability of the material. For the identification of blowholes and other defects the digital x-ray inspection is brought into action more and more frequently for a fast and efficient non-destructive testing method for quality assurance.

Possibilities of inspection:
lack of material / cracks / blowholes / contaminants and inclusions / porousness / form divergences

Turbine blades

X-ray photograph:
Wax forms for turbine blades

Information:
Modern turbine blades are equipped with channels or channel systems, through which cooling air blows during the operation. Due to the warped geometry, an ultrasound measurement is often very difficult. Digital x-ray inspection is suitable for testing the turbine blades on wall thickness, cracks and errors in the cooling system.

Possibilities of inspection:
damages / contaminants and inclusions / cracks / blockages or interruptions of the channel system

Wood and timber

Wood structure in timber

Information:
For the wood-working industry it is very important to be able to judge the quality structure and the condition of the wood already before the processing. Digital x-ray inspection offers the possibility to identify and to sort out promptly wood stocks of inferior quality or to transfer them to other processing possibilities.

Possibilities of inspection:
structure / contaminants and inclusions (e. g. shell splinters) / hollow spaces / decay / knots

Tubes and pipelines

X-ray photograph:

Information:
In order to guarantee the security, for example in the chemical industry, oil industry or in nuclear power plants, tubes and pipelines have to be checked not only during the production, but also in the regular operation. Particularly at insulated or jacketed tubes, x-ray imaging is often the only applicable method of non-destructive testing. The costs for the tube inspection can be reduced to a minimum by the digital x-ray inspection.

Possibilities of inspection:
wall thickness measurements / cracks / inclusions / shrinkage cavity / porousness / corrosion

Image Quality Indicator

X-ray photograph:
Duplex wire EN462-5 / ASTM E 2002

Information:
The duplex wire EN462-5 is used to determine the spatial resolution of x-ray systems. This x-ray image was taken with the digital x-ray linescan camera SEZ T3 without magnification and clearly shows the high resolution of the camera. Duplex wire 10D can be seen.

Possibilities of inspection:

Weld inspection

X-ray photograph:

Information:
A main point for the quality assurance of many industrial areas is the quality of welding seams. A fast and efficient quality control is often not attainable by conventional methods. But blowholes, interruptions and structure defects can be identified fast and reliable by the use of the digital x-ray technology.

Possibilities of inspection:
cracks / holes / interruptions- and structure defects / longitudinal- and cross-sectional defects / insufficient welding / inclusions

Aluminum casting 3

X-ray photograph:
Blowholes in an aluminium casting (3)

Information:
The market for aluminium castings is steadily growing. Especially at safety critical parts (like castings for the automotive industry) the manufacturers have to certify the product integrity to their customers. Blowholes and other concealed faults in the aluminium casting can cause acute danger for the end user. Digital x-ray inspection allows 100% in-line testing to fulfill the demands for zero failure rates.

Possibilities of inspection:
blowholes / porousness / inclusions / cracks / form divergences

Angle grinder cutting disc

X-ray photograph:
Grinding disc with material fault

Information:
Another example for a safety critical part is this grinding disc: While the disc visually seems to be faultless, the x-ray image clearly shows a serious fault in form of a material weakness. The fault can lead to a breaking of the grinding disc during operation and therefore to svere injury of the worker. A 100% digital x-ray inspection can eliminate the risk of bad grinding discs.

Possibilities of inspection:
missing glass fiber / cracks / porousness / form divergences / inclusions
